Chapter 10

Mark 10 covers a variety of topics from Jesus’ ministry including teachings about divorce and childlike faith (vs 1-16), a conversation with a rich young ruler about getting into heaven (vs 17-31), the foretelling of His suffering (vs 32-45), and the miracle of blind Bartimaeus receiving his sight (vs 46-52). There is so much to unpack from each of these passages, but I really want to hone in on the dialog between Jesus and the rich young ruler. The rich man asks Jesus in verse 17, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus’ response in verse 21 strikes conviction with this rich man - “You lack one thing: go and sell all your property and give to the poor, and you will have abundant treasure in heaven.” Understandably, the rich young ruler is grieved to hear this news. He’s thinking to himself, I have to sell everything I value to inherit eternal life?

The pivotal verse of this passage that I want to focus on is in verse 25 when Jesus says “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God.” The primary issue here isn’t necessarily the amount of possessions or money the rich man had, it was his heart posture. Salvation requires surrender - simply acknowledging Jesus as Lord is the first step, but actually surrendering your life and submitting to his Lordship is the necessary heart change for eternal life. As stated in Scripture, one cannot serve two masters, for he will hate one and love the other. The more wealth and possessions you have, the easier it is to be rooted in the comfort of material things rather than Jesus. Surrender is an essential part of our Christian journey, and we must actively reflect our heart posture to ensure we don’t value our possessions over Jesus.

Is there something or someone in my life that I value more than Jesus? Have I truly surrendered all to him? 

Prayer: 

Lord Jesus, I come to You right now and fully surrender myself to You. All that I am and all that I have is Yours. Forgive me of putting my possessions, my friends, my accomplishments, and my talents before You. I desire to know You deeper and hear Your voice. Jesus, my heart is Yours. In Your name I pray, Amen.
