The Sound of Silence

Nathan Witherell

Many people know the story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal. It is one of his greatest achievements as one of God’s prophets and would have been such a spiritually high moment to be a part of. For us, City Week is a very high moment every year. We get to spend a week in His presence surrounded by friends worshipping the one true God and evangelizing for Him.

In 1 Kings 19, we get to see the aftermath of Elijah vs the Prophets of Baal, and we find Elijah tired, weary, and ready to give up because he feels all alone. At one point, he even asks God to take him from the earth, because he has lost the will to “be the sound” and a voice for God.

What happens next is a lesson for all of us. God tells Elijah to go and stand at the entrance to a cave so that He can pass by and speak with Elijah. As the Lord passes by there is a mighty windstorm, an earthquake, and a fire, but the Lord was not in any of them. At the last moment, Elijah hears a gentle whisper and immediately goes to meet with the Lord.

You see, City Week can be a high moment, a loud moment, a triumphant moment, but for us to carry the sound beyond this week, we have to know His voice and embrace the silence. Imagine the sound of a crazy wind storm, an earthquake, and a raging fire, all for the Lord to be in a gentle whisper that could only be heard in silence. Be ready for the low moments after City Week where the world will try to play as many sounds as they can to distract us, when we really need to be attentive to His voice and His calling.

QUESTION FOR TODAY: How can you be more attentive to the Lord and prepare for distractions from the enemy?

PRAY THIS:

God, give me the strength to do what You have asked me to. Let me be obedient to what You are speaking to me today.

TRY THIS:

Play instrumental worship music and grab some paper. Listen to what comes to your mind and write it down. Be listening for the small things.
